Quayside Mills

My favourite building. In 1998 I spent a couple of months examining it in detail (as it was being renovated) and got to know its history intimately.

Briefly, it started as a towerhouse, built by Bishop Bellenden of Holyrood in the 15th century, probably as a prestige project to counter the royal building at the King's Wark across the river. A chapel was added on the south, then the North Leith Parish church was built to the west after the reformation. The building here became the manse. Various rebuilds and extensions (and the nice Dutch steeple) were added, until it was converted to a paint-mill in the 19th century when the church moved.

I see no-one has spotted the unique feature of yesterday's blip yet :)
