Carcassonne

We spent the last day of the holiday in Carcassonne, in the fortified Cite de Carcassonne rather than the larger lower city, la ville basse. The fortified cite which dates back to the first century is truly magnificent. The fortress which was held by, among others, Romans and then Visgoths in the 5th C, was thoroughly restored in 1853 by the theorist and architect, Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. It was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites in 1997 and although it has become quite commercialised it is certainly worth a visit to see the old city walls, very narrow streets, ramparts and drawbridge.

This blip was taken at night and I have "posterised" it to make the image more interesting.
