Glasgow's jobs crossroads
Two things happened today. On the two-year full-time course I lead we have 138 full-time students, 58 of whom are in second year. Today we had a great session, playing Cupid to match Glasgow businesses and start-ups to each one of the 58 students, giving work placements and internships. It's key to what we're doing, making things real-life, playing the long game to get each one a job.
And the second thing was this, tomorrow's Scotsman front page. The basic news reached me five minutes before the above session. It's pretty bleak news, and should be game-changing for colleges yes, but for so many other stakeholders. With this news and those stats, so many of us are failing our city. Change won't happen overnight, and student internships are a small drop in the ocean - we're working with start-up booster Entrepreneurial Spark and start-ups are key too. So many others need to get it right. We have to start somewhere and we have to all get it right.
