This is the waiting room of the cancer centre at the Western General in Edinburgh. I've been here - oh, let's see how many times : finished chemo a little over three years ago, scans every three months, then every four, then every six, so about eight or nine times. It was empty for a brief moment this morning so I leapt up to take a photo.
You wait trying not to be nervous. My oncologist is very good, he's supportive, even of all the daft alternative things that I do, he's measured, he treats me with respect, we even laugh a lot.
Today, the three metastatic tumours in my lungs (I have bowel cancer) have all grown by two or three millimetres. The radiologist said such slow growth was slightly unusual. I was a little despondent because of all the effort I've put in to the chi gung walking that was supposed to at least stop them growing. But Richard did some quick calculations (he's always right there by my side) and said that the rate of growth had slowed down a lot.
So that's something. I'll carry on with the chi gung walking till the next scan in six months' time. Plus the vegan diet, the supplements, homeopathy, mistletoe injections, and all the other bits and pieces that I do.
Sigh. It's a long long haul.
But I'm still here.
