The High Street
This imposing building occupies the north end of the High Street. Built about 1740 the original building only comprised the centre of the present edifice. This was the building which Robert Burns visited in 1787.
It was purchased by the 8th Earl of Lauderdale who commissioned Robert Adam, Architect who added two two-storey pavilions at the east and west sides and the entrance to the High Street was cut off and a new entrance added to the north side. The original entrance can be clearly seen in the very centre of the building. He also added the winged sphinx which is at the centre top of the the building.
The building was subsequently sold to the war office and became a barracks and is now owned by the local authority for council housing.
