Sonoran Toad

Beautiful but deadly to dogs that catch them. This desert toad is native to southern Arizona and can be seen during the monsoon season. This toad lies dormant, under ground, all year and only comes out during July, August or September, when the monsoon rains have softened the ground. It is the largest native toad in the United States. There are two glands on the back of the neck that hold poison which will kill a dog if he catches it in his mouth. If ones notices this right away, you can wash out the dogs mouth with a water hose and then take immediately to the vet. Maybe, saving the dog. Have not seen many since I moved here in 1999, mabe 5 at the most. This big guy was the size of both my fists.
