Zion National Park

Zion was named by early Mormon settlers for the sanctuary and refuge that it provided. Most of the rock formations and landmarks were given biblical names such as Angels Landing, Great White Throne and the Three Patriarchs. The cliffs do give one a sense of reverence.

We stayed at the bottom of the canyon in one of the buildings on the right. Zion Lodge is in the center.

We experienced rain upon arrival and in the night a flash flood swept down the Virgin River. It is a fast moving stream with a gradient of over 70 inches per mile. By comparison, the Mississippi River has a gradient of 1/2 inch per mile.
