Pompeii

I think many of us would have heard about Pompeii early in primary school. The city destroyed by a volcanic eruption and then dug up to reveal a whole way of life. Later we might have read fictionalised accounts and watched numerous documentaries about the event of 79AD. To visit Pompeii however is a quite breathtaking experience as it is easy to visualise a community going about its business. Shops, houses, temples and streets have been preserved for us to gaze and wonder at ; and all the time the brooding presence of Vesuvius is there.
