Red Rocks Gorge
I had been wanting to do this walk for some time. Started from Kambah Pool on the outskirts of Tuggeranong ACT. A gorgeous spring day. The walk was about an hour each way, with some slightly steep steps to negotiate. Well worth the effort. Lovely views of the gorge from the lookout. I sat and admired it for a while. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something in the water some distance away. It turned out to be a kangaroo. At one point it was sitting on a large flattish rock in the water, and then the next minute it jumped in and appeared to be completely submerged. At that point I wondered whether kangaroos could actually swim. I lost sight of it, hoping the poor thing hadn't drowned. Several minutes later I saw it emerge on the bank of the river. Unfortunately I didn't have a long enough lens to get a good clear shot.
The cliffs of Red Rocks Gorge are about 40 metres high, and were formed from molten rock being hurled into the air as the result of a volcanic eruption. The cliffs show columns typical of rocks of volcanic origin - some of these columns collapsed into the Murrumbidgee river bed, forcing the river into narrow channels which have formed rapids. The rapids are well known for rafting and canoeing, particularly after heavy rain. Some of the rapid names include Junkyard, Super Move, Shredder and Horseshoe. I think I'll just watch!
