Tumble Down Dick
The Tumble Down Dick Pub in Farnborough is sadly living up to its name.
The building is one of the oldest in Farnborough, Hampshire, with parts dating from the 16th Century. Local traditions link the pub's name with various historical figures including Richard Cromwell (Son of Oliver Cromwell), who
was the second ruling Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland, serving for just under nine months, from 3 September 1658 until 25 May 1659. After his fall from power, he was given the unflattering nickname of Tumbledown Dick by Royalists
In recent years the pub, which has not always had a very good reputation, was closed on health and safety grounds and eventually earmarked for demolition. Members of the local community have compaigned to save it, with a view to opening it as a community pub. In 2012 they achieved a major step in getting it listed as an "Asset of community Value" and a "Building of Local Importance".
