Girl Geek Scotland Summer Social
After an exhausting week at work, and with a sore throat threatening a nasty cold, tonight I attended the Girl Geek Scotland Summer Social. There were some rather bizarre things about the evening:
1. The venue was Summerhall, the former Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies, where my father was a student in the late 1950s/early 1960s. I found myself in the anatomy room for drinks and the dissection hall for dinner. Apart from the absence of body parts(!) these rooms looked like they had hardly changed in 50 years. I can't wait to show my photos to my father.
2. All that separated the diners at my table from the elements outside was a thin curtain behind which was a drafty window. Fortunately the warm atmosphere at the event, and particularly around our table, made up for the chill, although I have to say I wished that I hadn't worn sandals.
3. The meal itself was served an hour late. We later discovered that the venue's oven broke down so the food had to be cooked off-site and then transported back to us. Meanwhile those who were drinking filled the time by working their way through quite a large quantity of wine. (Don't worry: I behaved myself.)
4. When the food eventually reached the table, our supposedly hot main course was served cold - see above.
5. I had more or less lost my voice by the end of the evening, so by the time I headed home I knew for certain that the threatened cold was well and truly on its way. (OK, I admit it, I also talked a lot!)
Of course there was plenty of time for networking and some fun conversations, particularly during the panel sessions (as blipped here by LeanneS). I was also really pleased to spot the lady in the red dress from yesterday's blip on the table next to ours, so I introduced myself to her and showed her the shot. She was really excited to be a blip star :-)
Exercise today - walked to work, walked to Summerhall - 1.5 hours total.
