Life, not as we see it.

Well, here's the blurb for Thursday:- Off the boat and on our way south by 09:00. 500 miles to go, and we covered that in just over 7.5 hours driving, all on autobahn. Average speed 67 mph and fuel consumption 54 mpg.
For anyone who has not yet ventured onto Germany's Autobahns but has heard of the fast lane bully boys, I can confirm their existence. It is however only a fleeting presence, as you get used to spotting them in the mirrors and then again seconds later disappearing over the horizon.
I wasn't hanging about, hovering around 80 - 90 much of the time, but I recon some of these guys must have been touching 150. It was like watching UK motorway traffic from stationary!

Not a lot to see from motorways so just the one photo taken this morning. Rushed from one end of the boat to the other to get my camera, and back again to get this shot, just for you!

So, on to Friday. An altogether different run. Similar hours driving but only about 50 miles of motorways, then 300 miles of B roads through Austria. ( about 40 mph average, with consumption up to just over 50 mpg.)
We had forgotten that we had set the SatNav to "Avoid tolls" so instead of taking us on the Autobahn past Munich and then Salzburg, we had the pleasure, doubtful, of driving through the latter. Not a city I want to visit again. Sorry, but what we saw was not attractive.

Great driving roads then through the mountains - two sets - with as many hairpin corners as even I could wish for. What fun! Scenery quite spectacular, with manicured meadows, high pastures dotted with coos, and great big rugged hilly things. Grosse Munros! Much evidence of the main season being for skiing, otherwise very few signs of life until we stopped in a wee village and went in to "Kaffi's Kaffe". Full of locals getting pissed, at 4 pm on a Friday - how uncouth, eh?

Got to Ljubljana just as the weekend rush finished. Found our B&B with the help of the tourist info office, and settled in. Super atmosphere in the centre of the old town, with street entertainers, artisan food stalls, and, most importantly, beer vending establishments galore.

Dined alfresco then back to the digs to catch the news.

Tomorrow is a rest day for me, no driving. Whooppee!
