To Post a Letter

Except that if one did post a letter in here would the box be emptied before the brambles completely grow over it?

Looking at this in the 21st century it is hard to imagine why this letter box was ever placed in the position it is. It is a "VR" box so must have been erected in the period 1837-1901 to coincide with Queen Victoria's reign. The houses that are nearby were built much more recently. There are very few earlier houses nearby.

I was once shown an aerial photograph of a nearby farm and I could see quite a number of small rectangular crop marks. It was pointed out to me that these marks were the remains of the vernacular dwellings of rural folk. They were made of mud and thatch and when they were no longer needed they just returned to the landscape.

Who knows perhaps this letter box will last for a few more years yet!
