Lytes Cary Manor

William le Lyte was a feudal tenant of the estate in 1286 and the Lyte family occupied and added to the house until the mid 18th century.

Between 1755 and 1907 the house passed from one tenant to another and gradually fell into disrepair. It was then bought by Sir Walter Jenner, who restored the house to its former glory, decorating the interiors in period style. He bough fine 17th and 18th century furniture, antique tapestries and fabrics modelled after medieval textiles.

My blip shows an old photograph of the manor, taken in the 1900's, against how it looks today.

There's also a chapel which predates the house, being built by 1358, which although was renovated in 1631, was largely untouched by Sir Walters development other than to add a stained glass window.

The garden has been completely transformed and is listed as Grade II by English Heritage. The house is listed as Grade I.

Have been having a lovely week avoiding most housework, but will have to spend some time at home tomorrow, so there will be a break in very old house blips. I promise not to blip the vacuum cleaner ...
