Goat herder
Monday
We had a long drive ahead of us today, leaving Montenegro, driving back through Albania into Macedonia, and beyond Laura's home town of Kicevo to the village of Demir Kapija in the wine country. So we got an early start, and were on the road by about 8.15. Once again we were fortunate with the border crossings, and the drive through Albania didn't seem quite as bad as going, since we had done it before and knew what we were in for! We reached our hotel at Popova Kula Winery in Demir Kapija around 6.30. It's in a beautiful location, on a hillside overlooking the vineyards and the village, and the rooms were spacious and well-appointed. Having checked in, we decided to walk down into the village before dinner. We followed the path up through the cemetery to a lovely Eastern Orthodox church on a hilltop, passing two or three elderly men sitting on a bench talking. As we came back down, we saw this herd of goats coming down the lane, followed by the goat herder. We then realized the men we had passed were waiting for their goats. I guess one of them takes the goats up onto the hillsides during the day, and brings them back in the evening, their owners waiting by the church to take them home!
