Ruthven Barracks
Today we girded our loins and cycled very leisurely from Glen Feshie to Newtonmore and back, stopping to take photos of the tiny church at Insh, the sailing centre at Loch Insh, and the old ruined Ruthven barracks at Kingussie. The latter were built in the early 1700's to house Red Coat soldiers who were policing the lawless highlanders. The barracks are a very visible part of the landscape and appear to change colour in different lights.Although the stone is actually grey, it can look reddish in the evenng light.
We were lucky with the weather as there were heavy black clouds over the mountains, but any rain showers missed us and eventully the sun came out and it got very hot.
Today's coffee stop was Newtonmore and even now as we sit in Cafe Mambo ( of sacred memory) in Aviemore, drinking our soda and limes, we have foregone the pre internet visit to the Mountain cafe which has cakes the size of mountains. One must draw the line somewhere ........!
