One of life's great experiences was this night spent in a remote yurt camp with a Kyrgyz family in Besh Tash National Park in western Kyrgyzstan.

Pretty authentic night spent sharing sleeping quarters and drinking the national drink of fermented horse milk, which really isn't for the delicate Western palate.

The best we could offer in return was some agonising Kyrgyz using our phrasebook. The stock opening question in Kyrgyzstan seems to be: are your parents still alive?
