The Liberal Club
A few blips ago I mentioned Paisley Liberal Club and here it is. As I said it is in some need of TLC and with some effort it could yet again be a fine building.
Ironically Paisley has a strong Liberal tradition and in 1920 the former Liberal Prime Minister, H H Asquith, became MP for the town after his defeat at East Fife in 1918. In 1924 the town elected its first Labour MP. But in a by election in 1961 the Liberal candidate, John Bannerman, came close to winning the seat.
In the 1945 Labour landslide the victorious Labour candidate was Oliver Baldwin son of the former Conservative Prime Minister.
"Keep your eye on Paisley" as Disraeli probably did not say.
