Kelton the Beltie II
Today's the day ....................... to rebuild
I first came across Kelton the Belted Galloway Bull last summer on Castle Hill in the small town of Castle Douglas. He is made of wicker and stands an imposing three metres high - or, at least, he did until he was stripped down to his metal framework earlier this year. After that, as you can imagine, he looked a shadow of his former self.
I did wonder what was going to happen to him - and today, I got the answer when I happened to park in the nearby car park. His original creator, Trevor Leat, was hard at work bringing him back to life again. I couldn't resist going to talk to him and asking him how on earth he managed to achieve such a wonderful effect on such an enormous artwork. He was happy to chat and said that it was a case of just slowly building up the layers to give the bulk - a bit like the way the body is made up of muscles, blood vessels, sinews, tendons etc.
He's certainly doing a wonderful job on the new Kelton , who I'm sure will look even more magnificent than the original one ...........................!
