What are they?

This evening was Book Club. Our hostess provided us with a delicious supper.  She is an enthusiastic gardener who loves to try different fruits and veg.
So when she produced these we all said  
Eeek! what are they?  I'm still not sure but I don't think I'd want to serve them even mashed up!
