Chippenham (Wednesday 3rd September 2025)
Since my last visit to Chippenham in July this mural has appeared. Buckles is right next to the site of the old wharf so this is very appropriate.
A branch to Chippenham off the Wilts & Berks Canal was built in 1798, terminating at Chippenham Wharf in Timber Street, near the marketplace, and once home to Brinkworth's Coal Depot. The site is now the town's bus station, and part of Pewsham Way follows the line of the branch, and a spur at Stanley used to lead to Calne..
Chippenham Wharf was used by residents as a refuse tip, and council minutes from 1926 show a decision to dump pig offal in the disused waterway. The buried wharf was uncovered briefly during redevelopment in 2006.
