Two Great Students

A fun afternoon/early evening as I met up for a beer and dinner with two of my former students, Abby and Madie, at the McMenamin’s pub in Wilsonville, south of Portland. I had them both in English classes, and both in yearbook. Madie (dark hair) was an editor for me. She is now a surgical nurse at Providence Hospital in Portland, and Abby is finishing her nursing program at Linfield College Portland campus. We told stories from high school, we laughed, they told me the teachers they liked, and the others that weren’t so loved. They told the sad story of their close friend who died much, much too early, a young lady I also had in class. In the end, they talked about the stories of life and death in high school, and after.

As a former teacher, the best thing that happens is when we communicate in ways small, something online, or something great, like a face up over beers now. They’re both 30 years old now. How did that happen?

Full circle.
