A gliding buzzard above the garden

The call of buzzards is very distinctive, so when I heard one today I quickly crossed the room from my computer to the open window, to look down the garden and over the valley of the Lime Brook. I listened for several minutes, hearing the buzzards call regularly, a sound I think of as a type of ’mewing’, but I couldn’t see it. I wondered whether it had descended to the ground behind the trees at the end of our garden in pursuit of prey.

I decided to pop downstairs to get my camera and when I had it ready I saw a buzzard flying low down the slope of the valley, before then starting to ascend. It began to tightly circle as they often do if they want to fly back up the valley as the prevailing westerly winds generally allow them to clear the woods on the top of the hillsides once they have gained a bit of height after completing a few circles. The outcome of this circling brought it just above the trees behind our garden. Then it levelled and came towards me as I managed this shot which seems to show it observing me.

It quickly disappeared over our house but returned about a minute later being chased by several large crows which buzzed it constantly until it dived steeply and flew away down the valley towards town.
