The Riff-Raff Have Dirty Legs
Sunshine and heavy showers today. You might have seen the lunchtime news reporter outside the Bell Hotel getting soaked. Epping isn't far from here.
I was glad to get this shot of a chiffchaff in the elder bush by the back door this afternoon. It was overcast but I was pleased with how the camera picked up the bird through the twigs. I've heard it calling its name a couple of times recently but it mainly just says Weet at this time of year. As I've written before, it's quite difficult to differentiate a chiffchaff from a willow warbler unless they are singing. My picture shows the diagnostic dark legs of the chiffchaff quite well. Birders coined the mnemonic, the riff-raff have dirty legs.
