A new experience
Before I travel anywhere I check for events in the area that occur at the time I’m due to be there, often music events and such. I found some free tickets for a fireworks / disco extravaganza paid for by the local town. The theme was celebrating the end of summer. If I had wanted to pay on the door with no ticket it would have cost me 3.5 euros!!
The reality was ‘la trot’ horse racing (unexpected as horses and fireworks don’t mix) so I did a bit of touristy sight seeing, ate some food from a stall and had a couple of pints. MrH had one drink after he saw the queues for the men’s loos. We decided to leave after a couple of hours as we were not going to bet/ enjoy the racing as such and it felt better to do the walk back
To the hotel a couple of miles away before it got very dark (not sure we succeeded).
This isn’t my best picture of the night but there is a lot going on in it if you look, and it kind of sums up the evening, with the horse rider using a cart in most of the races.
It was certainly a family event and didn’t feel like something you dressed up to attend. I saw very few similarities with British racing events I have infrequently attended in the past. I saw lots of friendly and almost serious subdued behaviour. I saw families tending their horse, all ages. I saw an old man showing a large photo to a few racers and owners, so as to determine who won the race.
I heard more ABBA than I can shake a stick at. The DJs were struggling to get the disco going as everyone was sorting the horses.
There was a petting zoo with goats, rabbits, donkey and pony rides etc, very different to what I’ve seen before.
