I've got to send off my damaged paperwhite kindle in order to get a part exchange deal.  This means I'll be without a device for a while.  I decided to try and resurrect by very first keyboard kindle to use in the interim. Although the case had deteriorated,  the kindle came back to life after a long charge.  It took a while to sync,  but it's now up and running. I think blipped about buying the first kindle in my first year of blipfoto.
