40,000 Participants!
l was determined to be in St George’s Terrace by just before 8.30 to beat off the spectators and get a good position to take an image of the competitors streaming up the Terrace at the start of the annual City Surf Fun Run. Well the first bit was easy as I only had a 5 minute walk to the Terrace and fighting off the spectators wasn’t a factor. There was only a lovely young guy from the West Australian Newspaper who was there to photograph the start and me!!! I couldn’t believe it, the whole roadway was devoid of people until 8.30am when the starters gun went off. And then they came, in their thousands. It was quite a site to see and I was so happy I made the effort. It was a bit eerie as well as all you could hear was the sound of the runners feet pounding the pavement, thousands of them and no one was saying a word, not one word. It was pure concentration. What an amazing scene. We do love our fun runs in Australia :)
I was a bit braver when the second wave started and actually stood in the middle of the road as the runners came steaming up the hill. I’ve added that image as an extra. I’ve just spent the last 10 minutes having a conversation with myself as to which should be the main image.
