Everyday I Write The Book

Interviewing Ernie

I have this crazy friend who has dragged me into a pet scheme of hers to interview "ordinary" people and tell their stories. We started today with Ernie, 86 years young and full of interesting anecdotes about growing up after WW2 and the transition from a semi-rural to a suburban lifestyle.

I think my two favourite stories were about his childhood and living next door to German prisoners of war who caught rabbits for them, and the day his mother had a bedroom full of sheep. He is living proof that all lives are extraordinary.

The rest of the day was routine. I did cook a nice supper. Caramelised fennel and butter bean mash. And in the evening we watched the absurd, silly and woodenly acted Thursday Murder Club with The Queen, Ghandi, James Bond, the Pope, Withnail, a Star Wars fighter pilot, and Satan. At least those were roles which tested the actors.

Maybe we’ll interview them all next …
