Bryce’s Tree

As we were walking Zoe this evening, Bryce noticed this interesting discoloration on a tree in the hedgerow. I have no clue what it is. Could it be a form of lichen? The area is raised but still has the texture of the rest of the bark. Maybe a type of burl? 
The extra is of Bryce posing for me in front of the corn. He is growing so fast that I think he will be taller than me next year.
