Review
In the morning I worked until it was time to go into work for a chat with PhD student Y about her slides for that afternoon's first year review. Although one background slide still had errors on it - because her breadth of knowledge of the subject still needs some work - they were generally good, and I told her so. She's matured a lot as a researcher this year. We then had lunch with И, who was in to give Y moral support, and because it's her last day before a few weeks with her family back home.
The review meeting went well, and I then had to stay on for a the review meeting of a PhD student for whom I'm second supervisor. Back in the office, И and I had another long discussion about our strategy in the current funding discussions. We've been busy during this visit of hers, and she regretted that we'd not had time to just hang out, so I booked for us and her boyfriend at a fun restaurant in Edinburgh - Six by Nico. Unfortunately, just before we left, her boyfriend bailed due to work and an early flight tomorrow, so it was just the two of us. The theme of the meal was "space", with a levitating amuse bouche, a course eaten blindfold (in a black hole) and a ham hock terrine with 12 tiny garnishes! As always, not everything was brilliant as food, but it's good value fine dining.
There was half an hour before my bus back, so I had a "constitutional" walk through central Edinburgh via 16:Turf zones.
