OH MY ACHING NECK!
Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber); found in the wild in West Indies, Yucatán, Galápagos, South America, Africa, Eurasia and India. This one lives at the zoo in Milwaukee along with lots of others. Flamingos are filter feeders and consume small mollusks, crustaceans, blue-green algae, and diatoms.

A couple of years ago we actually had flamingos in Wisconsin. Several of them landed on the shore of Lake Michigan at Port Washington...about forty-five minutes from where I reside. Did you know a flamingo has more neck bones than a giraffe? Giraffes, humans and most mammals have seven neck (cervical) vertebrae, while flamingos have 19! This gives them the flexibility they need to clean their feathers, search for food, and perform elaborate courtship displays!
