Galo!

When we first moved to Brittany we expected that there would be a Breton language and culture, but since moving to 'Haute Bretagne' we have been informed that the locals in this part of the region are Gallo. The Gallos are so named from the Breton word Gall which means foreigner. Not to be confused with the Gauls who lived in France when the Romans invaded. It's quite an interesting story as they are currently dualing the RN164 which lies to the south of us and have erected signs in French and Breton. The local council hopes to get the road signs changed with 3 languages being represented, French, Breton and Gallo. Hence the scrubbing out of Breton names on the new signposts.

In addition the region (once an independent country) of Brittany officially included the upper part of the Loire Atlantique but this was redrawn during the 2nd world war under Marechal Petain who controlled the occupied part of France at that time. Since then there have been and is a campaign to reintroduce the Loire Atlantique into Brittany.
