A sting in the tale
Another dry and dull day. Seemed like a good day to get on with some gardening so I began this morning with a thorough watering of all beds, banks and pots. We're supposed to be getting quite a lot of showery weather from Tuesday onwards, so hopefully this will get the ground well soaked.
Carried on with a lot of dead-heading of Geranium palmatum which sows itself in the gravel path beside the house. A lovely plant, so I don't mind and it can easily be removed if it spreads too much. The white form of Geranium robertianum does the same, but is a bit more invasive.
After lunch I put the ladder up the bank down by the roadside and pulled out a number of unwanted ferns, plus the usual weeds such as buttercups and willowherb. I also cut out a number of self-sown hypericum - forget which - and while poking around at the base of one of them got what I thought was a thorn in my thumb. It turned out to be a sting as I'd stuck my thumb in a bee's nest!
I came up to the house for my camera and took a few pictures - this is probably the best so it's my Blip today. I looked it up on Google Lens and found that it's apparently a bumble bee's nest, though I don't know which species - quite a small one, less than a centimetre. Not even sure what the round balls are, but they're pea size and below. Does anyone know?
I entered it on irecord and added this picture. Maybe someone there will be able to identify it. I must go down now and cover it up with moss and let them get on with their lives!
