View from Bigbury on Sea...

...over to Burgh Island.

Into Plymouth this morning to pick up Angus, MrM's son, who directed us to Bigbury on Sea. We went down to the beach from there and, as the tide was out, walked across the sand to Burgh Island. It was hot and sunny, and we enjoyed the walk around the island, with fabulous views of the Devon coastline. Back at Bigbury Bay we indulged in well-earned ice creams before walking back up to the van.

Mid-afternoon MrM drove us back to Plymouth, and Angus took us on a walking tour of the city. We ate at a Louge on the waterfront (extra), and afterwards strolled around the Barbican area where we passed the Plymouth Prawn* (extra). A lovely day!

Finally, back to the tent. MrM announced that we will be changing campsites tomorrow - he has booked us on to the site at Bigbury on Sea for the rest of our holiday. This came as something of a relief! The 'wild camping' site where we are now based is wild only in the sense that it consists of several fields on a rather scruffy farm, with piles of tractor tyres and pieces of rusting farm machinery lying around. The 'facilities' near the field where we are camped are anything but clean, the loos don't flush properly, and a little cold water comes out of the showers (made from metal watering cans!), much to the annoyance of a young man who had attempted to use one...

*The so-called Plymouth Prawn isn't a prawn at all! The sculpture’s official name is The Leviathan, and apparently it consists of parts from several different sea creatures in an effort to represent the variety fish and shell fish landed on the Barbican. It has a cormorant’s feet, a plesiosaurus’s tail, the fin of a John Dory, a lobster’s claws and the head of an angler fish. None of it is prawn!
