Hotch potch
Guildhall Yard is a fascinating hotch potch of architecture that spans various periods.
This view shows the south side and the building with the wing-shaped roof is the Grade II listed Guildhall West Wing (1970-75). It houses the City library and archives, and is also a local council administrative building.
Adjacent is St. Lawrence Jewry, which was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666 and rebuilt by Wren (1670-77). It’s listed Grade I.
The sliver of white wall, next to the church, is the Guildhall shown on my post of 18th August. The building and Great Hall are 15th century. The facade has been through various modifications, the last being in 1954. Here’s a link to the post https://www.blipfoto.com/entry/3404168708820569196
The modern but nonetheless, magnificent pavement (1992) sits 20 feet above remnants of a Roman amphitheatre discovered in 1988 and displayed in the Guildhall Art Gallery nearby.
A fascinating part of the City that, at times, can be remarkably tranquil.
