The Midsteeple

A shopping trip took us to Dumfries once again, where this impressive three-storey building stands in the middle of the High Street. It is considered one of the town's oldest buildings and over the centuries has served as a prison, a council house, and a clerk's chamber. The body of poet Robert Burns was laid out here in 1796 so that local people could pay their last respects.
