Lost in Thought

A partial view of Chastleton

We seem to be back in the hot sunny weather again so we decided to ring the changes and not go to Upton House!
We went to Chastleton in the Costwolds which was not as busy as I expected although, this was the best image I could come up with which didn't involve far too much in the way of people removal.

Chastleton is built on the site of a previous house belonging to Robert Catesby (wrong side of the gunpowder plot) and is noted for being almost untouched since the end of the Civil war in which the family picked the wrong side - and - the head of the family allowed himself to be mistaken for the king as he fled from the battle of Worcester.

Upon their arrival at the house in pursuit, the roundheads were greeted by the lady of the house who offered them beer laced with laudanum .... they all promptly fell asleep and he escaped on one of their horses.

The family were fined heavily for picking the wrong side, drug dealing* and horse theft - they didn't ever recover their fortune.

As ever - do not take any of my ramblings to be historically even handed *or entierly accurate :-)
