VJ80
Mrs S and were up, dressed for parade and out of the house by 830am ready for the VJ80 Flag Raising on The Moor in Falmouth. Ceremony over we headed off for a Wetherspoons breakfast with the unlimited tea or coffee.
10:30 and we were heading for Kimberley Park and the formal Service of Commemoration. Aside from one quite surreal moment I found it a quite moving ceremony. I’m of an age where through family I knew WWII veterans intimately, my Uncle Biddo, (Biddulph), was a Chindit, he was a gruff chain smoker with strange blotchy tattoos, (I now know them to be typical of Far East Veterans).
Anyway the surreal moment, I was in the rear rank, opening prayers were coming to an end when the trousers of the pin striped gentleman next to me just dropped round his ankles, not slid but dropped completely in one movement. We were being filmed from behind so I had some idea of the view the filmers received as he bent over to pull them up. A glance to my left showed friend Mandy biting her lip so as not to laugh I got through reading the Exhortation and remainder of the service ok.
In show of typical British reserve not a thing was said until we broke for coffee when Mandy and I made eye contact and burst out laughing.
Home for coffee and a light dinner before heading down to the Prince of Wales pier for the annual Falmouth RNA Fireworks Boat Trip.
