The armoured elephant
We took Eben & Luca to The Royal Armouries museum in Leeds. It's a big, airy building with plenty to explore. I don't think it glorifies weapons or war either; there's plenty of historical and social context on display.
I watched Eben read a display about knives and knife-carrying among teenage lads, presented as a kind of graphic novel sequence. Both he and Luca got engrossed in some audio-visual presentations, the best of which (to my mind) featured a woman SOE officer working undercover in WW2 France, showing how she concealed secret messages and equipment like radio parts. We also watched an excellent live reenactment of a Roman man training a captured slave to be a gladiator. The cruelty of the process was not disguised.
Neither of them was as fascinated by the armoured elephant as Richard and I were, up in the 4th floor Asia and Africa gallery... though there was some discussion about "what happened when the elephant needed a poo" :-)
