National Arboretum

We were staying very near to the National Memorial Arboretum and decided to visit it today, one day ahead of the King’s visit for VJ day. All is on a grand scale, and various parts make you think about the horrors of war and the people that have died, but this exhibit made me think of my Mum, evacuated from her East London home twice, once to Bath, and once to Devon. She wasn’t happy when there, missing her family and being exploited by the family “looking after” her i.e made to clean, cook, feed the farm animals, and sing for money in the local pub. All at the age of 12.
She hated the air raids dropping bombs nearby when at home, but hated being evacuated more.
Afterwards we went for a short walk in Alrewas, which has a pretty canal, and then went back to Wychnor Park where we ate dinner in the restaurant.
