Salt marshes
Today we went to explore the salt marshes on Two Tree Island, a National Nature Reserve that’s classed as a site of Special Scientific Interest. In addition to the marshes with various salt-tolerating plants, there are mudflats, lagoons, and much wildlife including many species of birds. We walked a good few miles and, only now and again, saw another person.
The area was reclaimed from the Thames Estuary in the late 1700s and used for farming until 1910 when a sewage works was built on the island. Between 1936-1974 it was used as a landfill site. A valuable shift in land use, I'd say.
On the stretch approaching the island there are a number of abandoned boats and in extras there's a shot of one that I found rather attractive.
