What a Monumental Cock-Up!

THURSDAY

A drive over to St Helens this afternoon to collect some new bedding and curtains. The a quick turnaround at home and out again.

With just three games to go and promotion in our sights, I travelled to Rhyl to face Grove Park this evening.

Things quickly went pear-shaped. We got off to a poor start, with only two winners from our first eight players. I lost my own game 16-21, and by the time the last two players stepped onto the green, we were staring down the barrel: 22 points behind on the aggregate score and all but resigned to a disappointing defeat.

But then, in the fading evening light, our final two players pulled it out of the bag! One stormed to a 21-6 win, the other followed up with a solid 21-11, dragging us back from the brink and snatching a 6-6 draw overall including the all important  aggregate points and leapfrogged us into the promotion spot  two points ahead of our neighbours Dyserth (who only picked up 4 pts at their away game).

The celebrations were short lived. Overnight, we discovered that our 21-6 hero had exceeded the allowed number of appearances for our A team — a casualty of the confusing system where the A team borrows players without any clear tracking. As a result, his game will be disqualified, and the score reversed to a 0-21 loss. That also means losing the vital 2 points for aggregate.

Just like that, we drop to one point behind Dyserth — with two games remaining: one against them, and the other against the division leaders.

It's going to be an uphill fight but the drama isn’t over yet…
