Arctic Fox

Isafjordur is the largest settlement in the West Fjords peninsular.

We were tendered ashore for this visit, so went in early to wander round the small fishing town of 2,600 inhabitants.

Today’s trip was to Sudavik and the Artic Fox centre. Life for Sudavik’s population was changed in 1995 when an avalanche destroyed part of the village. The new homes have been built furth along the fiord in a safer place.

The Artic Fox Research Center has a very interesting and informative museum. We saw a number of “stuffed” specimens, but didn’t see the two rescued cubs that were tucked away in in their underground “hidey-hole”. The two cubs are 6 weeks old and were taken from Mum as Dad wasn’t providing sufficient food for all 4 cubs. Two were left with Mum and hopefully will survive. The 2 rescued cubs are feeding and developing well, so will be released back in their original territory in the autumn.
