Pigeon rescue
We found a baby pigeon grounded in the garden this afternoon. It had obviously fallen out of its nest which was out of my ladder's reach high up in a tree. It looked as if a parent pigeon was in the nest but it didn't seem particularly interested and, in any case, it could hardly recover the baby. It seems that the baby either fell or was pushed out of the nest. We had put Rocky the cat indoors, much to his disgust, but there was obviously a risk from any other cat, or fox, or even an owl.
So, we needed to intervene and discovered that there was a Wildlife Hospital at Leatherhead just 30 minutes away. We rang them and they confirmed they would take our tiny feathered baby and were open until 8.30pm. So it was that Jen and I headed off along the M25 to the hospital pictured in today's blip and extra. As we arrived another baby pigeon had just been left at the hospital and we were assured that our baby would have lots of company. The hospital is run by the Wildlife Aid Foundation which provides a full range of non-species specific services for wild animals in distress. It is an entirely volunteer operated charity and we were really impressed with the service we received. I was happy to make a donation as well as buy a pair of bamboo socks they had for sale. Let's hope our baby pigeon enjoys the company of all the other pigeons at the hospital and grows to be able to be returned to the wild.
