Diary of an Edinburgher

Hammerfest, briefly

Today, apart from being JR's birthday, has been an otherwise inauspicious day. The weather closed in, it was mist and murk the whole way. Though it magically cleared up in the evening. It was also a long sail, with just a few quick stops, no excursions. Which was just as well, as we were mostly surrounded by comparatively low lying boring (compared to what we've become accustomed to) rocky islands.

JR went to the gym twice, and in between we relaxed, read, watched tv (Find My Beach House/Australia) and snoozed. We stopped at Hammerfest for an hour, so we hopped off and walked round the town. In the rain. JR got to use her new Bergen umbrella (having left her old one in Wetherspoons in Edinburgh Airport). Our dinner companions saw two reindeer wandering around town. We didn't.

We stop in Tromso tonight, for some people to go to the midnight concert in the cathedral, then we sail onwards to Svolvær. It's all action tomorrow, in and around Lofoten Islands again. There are many excursions, including horse riding on the beach, but we're going on a sea eagle safari, though in a proper boat, not a RIB.

We (being suite guests) got a very nice present of a book (each) about Norway and this coastal journey. Excellent.

One of our sister ships passed by on the journey north, but no flag waving this time.

JR has had a memorable birthday!
