Pay for Parking in Paradise

Today we called in to the small coastal town of Brunswick Heads on the north coast of NSW. One website says that … people looking for a quiet, unpretentious town for a family holiday will find that Brunswick Heads is a genuine timewarp - a town which, in its ambience and style, is more reminiscent of the 1950s than the 21st century.

But since this was written the local Council (Byron Bay Shire) has introduced a regime of paid parking throughout the town. We found no exceptions - there are parking meters and sternly-worded signs everywhere.  As disgruntled but law-abiding citizens, we tried to do as ordered  but couldn’t find a parking meter that worked. Maybe the locals have vandalised them all! It was all a bit disappointing and we may not return.

Today’s trivia: Brunswick Heads was named for Queen Caroline  of Brunswick, wife of British (German) King George IV. I didn’t notice any headland, but read that, despite the plural, the place is named after a 25m ‘high’ hill just north of the mouth of the Brunswick River.
