The Bungle Bungles …
……………………… at Purnalulu National Park.
Purnalulu is the Aboriginal word for sandstone.
The sandstone formation in the Bungle Bungles is the most distinctive form of cone karst in the world.
The dark horizontal bands are caused by Cyanobacteria and the orange bands are formed by iron and manganese in the sandstone; they’re known as beehive domes, forged some 350 million years ago
An Aboriginal woman joined us in the Cathedral Cave, and talked about her life in the area, and then sang to us, with her beautiful voice reverberating around the immense space. Unforgettable.
This visit was my highlight of the Kimberley trip. The formations are unique and outstanding; incredibly beautiful. More in Extras
