TheOttawacker

A close shave, well, sort of

A day when I spent a fair bit of time saving and deleting photos from Ottawacker Jr.’s Victoria trip. I only glanced at some of the files, but I am pretty sure there are some classics in there. Other than that, and some hard-core cataloguing, not much happened. I took Ottawacker Jr. to his soccer practice, stopped off at the LCBO for some more white wine, and then came back to an email from Iwona in BC. My jaw dropped. Apparently, the reason for the Mer Bleue wetland area being closed is because it had been used as a bombing site during WW2, and there are still a certain number of UXBs there. The problem is, our Department of National Defence has no idea how many. And a recent survey using drones found at least 17. WTAF? I think people have collective amnesia after a period of conflict (and I can understand that, six months into the Orange Turd’s second stint and I am already wanting to forget much of my recent history). It was the same in the UK. Apparently, there is the wreck of a munitions boat at the entrance to the Thames which, if it explodes, could have the same effect as a small nuclear explosion. And people carry on living a normal life. Perhaps they think supporting Chelsea is a form of penance?

Anyway, all that to say, thank God we didn’t go to Mer Bleue yesterday and skip over the rope with the big “Closed” sign. Because you know exactly what would have happened, don’t you? I’d have thrown a peach pit into the bog and it would have set off one of the bombs, causing a tsumami of peat to start its inexorable journey towards Ottawa. So, all in all, probably a good decision.
