Hanging around
I spent an enjoyable hour or more watching this common darter emerge this morning. This is perhaps the most exciting bit, as it gradually pumps itself out of the exuvial casing.
Later: I've added an extra showing the moment when the emerged insect came clear of the shell and started trying to find a safe location from which to finish expanding its body and wings. At this stage the wings look rather like an exotic skirt.
