Alaska Building

The Alaska Building in Bermondsey.

The stinkier industries used to end up south of the Thames, so the leather trade was prominent in the area. This still shows in street names like Tanner Street, Morocco Street and Leathermarket Street.
This was the entrance to the Martin fur merchant's factory which processed fur seals. The gate is from 1869, but the art deco building behind was built in the 1930s. It is now flats and happily no longer making furseal coats.

I think the seal on the gate has a very human face and is possibly a selkie.
